“I felt the earthquake, too, around 2 p.m.,” Linda Roy of Jensen Beach said. “My office chair started slightly wobbling, which lasted about seven seconds.”

The U.S. Geological Survey originally estimated the earthquake at magnitude 6.4, but a magnitude 6.1 earthquake is considered strong and capable of causing significant damage.

Does Florida get earthquakes?

Earthquakes in Florida are extremely rare since the state is not located near any tectonic plate boundaries. The closest fault line to Florida is in the Caribbean Sea, north of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and south of Cuba toward Guatemala.
