Vero Beach police officers responded July 17 to a report of a deceased person in a grassy median near the intersection of Eighth Avenue and 21st Street, according to a news release issued July 22.
The man was identified as Mario Raya, 25, of Sebastian, according to Lt. Chris Roberts.
The police investigation found that Raya was traveling at 113 mph on a 2008 Honda CBR1000 motorcycle through the intersection of 15th Place and U.S. 1, about half a mile from where he was found. The motorcycle went off the road as it approached the Eighth Avenue and 21st Street intersection and crashed into a concrete utility pole, according to the news release.
Speed was the sole contributing factor as to the cause of the crash, the release stated.
Florida has a “super speeder” law that targets drivers who go 50 mph or more over the speed limit or drive over 100 mph in a manner that endangers others, according to Florida statutes. Penalties for those charged with violating the law can include jail time, significant fines and a mandatory court hearing.
The law took effect July 1, 2025, and since then several arrests have been made on the Treasure Coast.
