Florida city breaks daily rainfall record as rainy weather continues

One last gusty and rainy day was expected on the Treasure Coast after the previous day broke rainfall records.

Vero Beach broke its daily rainfall record on April 8, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne. Vero Beach received 1.62 inches of rain, which nearly doubled the previous record of 0.84 inch set in 1973.

A marginal risk for localized flooding continued April 9, especially along the coast, as a minor-to-moderate excessive rain threat also continued.

Bands of heavy downpours would develop during the day, according to the National Weather Service, and areas impacted by them could see as much as 4 inches of rainfall.

Wind gusts would be as high as 35 mph near the coast and 30 mph inland. A wind advisory remained in effect along the coast with sustained winds of 15-25 mph.

Rain chances decrease after 7 p.m., and the next day, April 10, was expected to be drier and less windy.

Dangerous boating conditions continued with near-gale conditions on April 9, according to the National Weather Service. Conditions would slowly improve late week but remain poor to hazardous into the weekend and early next week.

Beachgoers should remain out of the ocean as dangerous surf at 8-12 feet lasts through early April 10 and a high rip current risk lasts through the weekend.
