Florida baseball's series finale against Miami canceled due to weather

Florida baseball was forced to cancel its series finale against Miami due to weather conditions on Sunday, March 1.

There will be no make up date for the matchup a team spokesperson told The Gainesville Sun.

Florida (11-1) claimed the series against the Hurricanes (10-2) last night with an 8-4 win on Saturday, Feb. 28. UF opened the series with a 7-2 victory over Miami.

The Gators reclaimed the all-time series advantage over Miami at 138-136-1 and will hold the lead into next season for the first time since the 1969-70 campaigns (29-28 record). Florida’s two-game sweep against Miami marks the Gators’ sixth-straight series win over the Hurricanes in Coral Gables.

Through two games, the No. 7 Gators’ relief pitching combined to allowed one run from six hits, three walks and 12 strikeouts in 10 innings.

The Gators head into next week riding an 11-game winning streak.

Florida returns to Condron Ballpark for all five of its games next week as UF faces Florida Atlantic on March 3 and then Florida A&M on March 4. UF will then host High Point for its weekend series.

Here’s what happened in Florida’s series against Miami.

Ethan Surowiec delivered a three-run homer in the ninth to seal the win. Reliever Ricky Reeth gave up one runs off three hits in four innings of work while striking out five batters.

Ethan Surowiec hits a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to extend Florida’s lead to 8-4.

Florida pulls ahead but misses opportunity

Miami walks the bases loaded for Florida with no outs. However, the Gators come up with only one run after a 2-out balk was called. UF leads 5-4 in the top of the seventh inning.

Miami ties it up

Reeth gives up an RBI sac fly to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth.

Aidan King exits early due to injury

After a Miami batter gets hit by a pitch from Aidan King, Florida goes to the bullpen in the bottom of the third. King gave up three unearned runs two hits, one walk and struck out three with UF holding a 4-3 lead. King met with the trainer on the mound and exited the game. Florida goes to reliever Ricky Reeth.

Florida baseball responds and takes the lead

The Gators respond and hang four runs to jump. UF opens the inning with three straight singles. Sam Miller and then Kyle Jones hit back-to-back RBI singles. An error then scores another run for UF followed by a wild pitch. Florida takes a 4-3 lead in the top of the second inning.

Miami jumps ahead

Sam Miller misses a flyball with two outs. On the next at-bat, the Hurricanes hit a 3-run homer to jump ahead.

Game 1 final: Florida 7, Miami 2

Florida reliever Jackson Barberi closed out the game as he allowed two hits and struck out three batters in 3.1 innings. At the plate, Brendan Lawson went 3-for-3 at the plate, drove in two runs and scored three times.

Florida plates 5 runs in the eighth inning

After Kendall’s homer, Lawson hit an infield RBI single, which led to Miami falling into trouble on the mound. The Hurricanes walked the bases loaded with Cash Strayer drawing an RBI walk. Blake Cyr added a run with a sac fly with Caden McDonald hit an RBI single before the inning ended.

Florida basket all pulls ahead

Freshman Jacob Kendall hits a solo home run that travels 412 feet over the right field wall. Florida now leads Miami 3-2 in the top of the eight inning.

Miami ties it up

Reliever Jackson Barberi enters the game and give up an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth. Barberi bounces back with a strikeout to end the inning.

Miami gets on the board

The Hurricanes score a run from a check swing that turns into an infield single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, which ends Liam Peterson’s night. In 5.2 innings, Peterson struck out eight batters, walked and gave up six hits. In 98 pitches, Peterson threw 59 strikes.

Florida picks up a run

Lawson led off the inning with a single. Cash Strayer drives him in with a sac fly to extend UF’s lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning.

The Gators get on the board after Brendan Lawson hits a solo home run. Lawson’s long ball, which is his fourth of the season, traveled 430 feet to deep left. UF leads 1-0 in the top of the first.

Cade Kurland out vs Miami Game 1

Per a team spokesperson, Cade Kurland will miss the opening game against Miami with an oblique. Kurland had previously missed a game against Kennesaw State, and was initially not planned to play in the Sunday game due to what Kevin O’Sullivan said was a bruise on his arm.
