The group stage of the FIFA Club World Cup is over. Now the real fun begins as 16 teams are left for a series of winner-take-all games to determine the world’s best soccer team.
Lionel Messi and Inter Miami advanced as the only one of three MLS teams to make the knockout stage. They’ll be up against Paris Saint-Germain, who recently won their first UEFA Champions League title as kings of Europe. Messi has history with PSG, playing for the French side from 2021 to 2023.
FIFA’s first expanded Club World Cup has been dominated by European teams, who make up 10 of the final 16 teams. But Brazil supplied three teams to the knockout stage, with perhaps the biggest Round of 16 matchup set up between rivals Botafogo of Rio de Janeiro and Palmeiras of Sao Paolo.
Florida will play host to four more games in the tournament. Italy’s CR Flamengo takes on Bayern Munich — champions of Germany’s Bundesliga in 11 of the past 12 seasons — at Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins and Miami Hurricanes. The stadium will also host Real Madrid of Spain vs. Italian power Juventus. Meanwhile, Orlando will see English superpower Manchester City play Al-Hilal, the lone Arab club to advance, in the Round of 16 before hosting a quarterfinal on the Fourth of July.
The single-elimination matches all build up to the final July 13 in the shadow of New York City. After that, it’s time to make final preparations for the big show: the 2026 World Cup taking place across the United States, Mexico and Canada.
