FedEx Cup Playoffs: How the playoffs work, schedule, current standings, previous winners

The FedEx Cup Playoffs brings an exciting atmosphere to the world of golf. Over three straight weekends, 70 players will be whittled down to one champion.

The playoffs will take place at three different courses. The starting field of 70 golfers will play the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee. After Memphis, the bottom 20 players will be cut and 50 players will play the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland. The bottom 20 in Owings Mills will be eliminated and the final 20 will travel to Atlanta to play in the TOUR Championship for the FedEx Cup Championship.

The 70 players that participate in the playoffs are determined by their play over the PGA Tour thus far. Each tournament that a player participates in will give them a certain number of FedEx Cup points based on their position in the tournament.

In major tournaments such as the Masters, U.S. Open, and the PGA Championship, winners of those respective tournaments would earn 750 points in the FedEx Cup standings while others PGA Tour events winners earn 500 points.

FedEx Cup standings

The top golfers have not moved places over the weekend but William Mouw made a huge jump after winning the ISCO Championship and is currently number 83 in the FedEx Cup standings. He will need to do some more work to reach the top 70 before the St. Jude Championship but is on a good path to be in the playoffs.

FedEx Cup recent winners

Rory McIlroy has the most FedEx Cup Championships with three. Tiger Woods won two championships in 2009 and 2007, which was the first ever FedEx Cup Championship.
