Farm Share, the leading nonprofit and the largest food bank in the state, focuses more on purpose than drive as it strives to distribute food to Floridians facing food insecurity through nearby ministries in the Tallahassee area.
Two upcoming drive-thru distribution events are planned to assist residents in need, one on June 26, at Anderson Chapel AME Church, 1307 Harlem St., and another on June 28, at Life Deliverance Ministry, 3377 Jim Lee Road. Both events will start at 8 a.m. and continue until supplies are out.
Attendees will receive fresh produce and nonperishable canned goods at no charge. For safety reasons, the events are drive-thru only, with participants encouraged to arrive in a vehicle for volunteers to load the groceries.
“With hurricane season underway and schools closed for the summer, families are under increased pressure to provide food,” Stephen Shelley, CEO of Farm Share, said in an email to the Tallahassee Democrat. “This week’s food distributions in Tallahassee are part of our ongoing efforts across Florida to ensure no one goes hungry.
“We organize over 20 community food distributions weekly, including regular events in Tallahassee, so families can rely on us during difficult times. This is in addition to supplying nearly 2,000 food pantries and feeding organizations with food.”
Requests for assistance continue to rise during the summer months, when school meal programs are on hold, and again after major storms, when supply chain disruptions can cause temporary shortages and increased grocery prices. Volunteers with Anderson Chapel AME Church and Life Deliverance Ministry are providing volunteers to assist with the free distributions.
