Pedestrians before e-bikes, scooters keeps Tallahassee sidewalks safe | Letter

Let’s work to keep our sidewalks safe for pedestrians

I recently read of the death of a cyclist in New York City, hit head-on by an e-scooter that was traveling the wrong direction in the bike lane. A few days later, I read the “My View” by Llona Geiger of Tallahassee, addressing the increased dangers for pedestrians on sidewalks, created by the uptick in use of powered scooters and e-bikes.

Experienced cyclists avoid sidewalks unless there are no alternatives and most are aware pedestrians have the right-of-way and speed needs to be reduced.

I do not know what the answer is for people who find themselves dependent upon this newest form of moving from point A to point B. People without vehicles need transportation, but not at the expense of pedestrians or human powered cyclists. Alternative forms of transportation have always been a challenge in Tallahassee.

Perhaps Tallahassee’s rapid population growth, sprawling development, and unreliable public transportation has added to the popularity of powered scooters and bikes. Add another problem to the growing list for our public leaders.
