A 14-year-old girl sustained critical injuries when the electric skateboard she was riding crashed with a motorbike on a street near Wellington late on April 8, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.
The girl suffered injuries to her brain, ribs and pelvis after the skateboard knocked her to the pavement, according to a sheriff’s report.

Paramedics took both the girl and the motorbike rider to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach as pediatric trauma cases, the sheriff said. The girl was in pediatric intensive care as of April 9.
The crash happened at a time of concern over the safe operation of electric bicycles, motorcycles and similar vehicles in Palm Beach County. In 2025, Palm Beach County hit a record number of e-bike fatalities, with six deaths.
The wreck also came a day after two Wellington teens sustained injuries in an electric motorcycle wreck.
14-year-old motorbike rider sustained minor injuries
The crash happened just after 10 p.m. on the 9000 block of Pinion Drive in the Palm Beach Ranchettes neighborhood just east of the Wellington village limits, according to the report.
The girl was eastbound on the skateboard. The motorbike rider, a 14-year-old Wellington boy, was westbound when they crashed. He sustained minor injuries.
Neither teen was facing criminal charges as of April 8, the sheriff’s report said.
The report does not say how fast the skateboard or the motorbike was traveling at the time of the crash. It also does not say whether the street was lighted or if the nighttime conditions played any role in the wreck. The sheriff’s report provided no details about the motorbike except that it was a 2007 Kawasaki.
In the e-moto crash, the teen riding the e-moto — a vehicle that can travel at speeds exceeding 50 mph — crashed into another boy. Both also received medical care as trauma-alert patients.
Electric bike, motorcycle injuries rising across Florida, report says
Reports of e-bike injuries and fatalities are surging across Florida, with trauma centers reporting a sharp increase in incidents, particularly among children, according to the American College of Surgeons.
In Palm Beach County, e-bike fatalities peaked in 2025 with six recorded deaths. Several cities in the county have passed laws to prohibit and limit the use of e-bikes including Palm Beach, Jupiter and Juno Beach
Florida lawmakers passed legislation in March to regulate e-bikes that include issuing a fines to riders traveling more than 10 mph within 50 feet of pedestrians.
