Andrea Chaney hit a three-run home run May 13, powering the Heath softball team to a 14-0 victory against visiting No. 11 Columbus East in a Division IV first-round game.
Lexi Purington added three hits, including a double, two runs and three RBIs, Addison Purdy and Leighton O’Reilly two hits and two runs apiece and Laityn Dennison and Kate Zarins two hits apiece and a combined three RBIs for the No. 10 Bulldogs (4-17), who visit No. 1 Licking Valley for a district semifinal at 5 p.m. May 19. Natalie Blakely struck out 10 in a five-inning one-hit shutout.
Newark wins at Northridge
Emerie Brown’s three-run double in the first inning got Newark off and running in a 13-2 victory at Northridge.
Mallory Back added three hits, including a double, three runs and an RBI, Savannah Woody two hits, two runs and three RBIs and Lexi Shanaberg a hit, two runs and two RBIs for the Wildcats (6-19). Maygen Woody and Brown combined to strike out five and allowed three hits and a run apiece.
Gracie Smith led the Vikings (8-16) with two hits, a run and an RBI, and Cheyann Severance added two hits and a run and Tori Hartman an RBI. Ellie Reese struck out two and allowed two hits and three unearned runs in two innings.
Watkins wins late
Watkins Memorial scored single runs in each of the final two innings to beat visiting Delaware 6-5 and complete a rally from a 5-0 third-inning deficit.
Ava Bailey doubled twice as a part of a three-hit game and drove in two runs for the Warriors (19-7), and Bryna Davis added two hits, including a triple, and a run, Gracie Gerhardt a home run and two RBIs and Sierra Fuchs a double and an RBI. Cori Groothuis shut out the Pacers over the final four innings of a complete game.
Liberty drops home game
Vanessa Carroll singled for No. 7 Liberty Christian (6-12) in a 21-0 loss to visiting No. 9 Mechanicsburg in a Division VI first-round game.
BASEBALL
Johnstown wins
Erik Marohl totaled four hits, including two doubles, and seven RBIs for Johnstown in a 29-0 victory at Columbus International.
Keaton Archibald and Jackson Ryan added three hits and three runs apiece, combining for five RBIs for the Johnnies (9-13). Four pitchers combined for eight strikeouts in a five-inning perfect game.
Heights falls on road
Maxim Fink and Zach Bricker each singled for Licking Heights (5-15) in a 16-0 loss at Dublin Scioto.
TRACK
Chavis places third
Mitchell Chavis recorded a distance of 147 feet, 4 inches in the discus to take third for the Newark boys during the first day of the Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division championships at Logan.
Treig Loughman added a fourth-place finish in the long jump (20-5¾) for the Wildcats. In the girls meet, Newark’s Larissa Harper in the discus (104-0) and Kyleigh Davis in the long jump (16-4.5) also each placed fourth.
BOYS TENNIS
Watkins duo advances
The Watkins Memorial doubles team of Matthew Reid and Graham Smith qualified for the Division I district tournament May 12 out of the Upper Arlington sectional tournament.
Reid and Smith, who had a bye, won twice, beating Worthington Kilbourne’s Paul Sterenberg and Jacob Lee, 6-0, 6-2, to reach the semifinals and return May 16 to play for placement. Gavin Adelman and Nathan Walter added a doubles win for the Warriors.
At Gahanna, four of the five Granville entries won two matches each.
Purin Songrug and Ben Prokop at singles and Owen White and Daniel Prokop and Kyle Kirby and Will Heckman at doubles all finished 2-1, falling in their district qualification match to seeded opponents. Jack Hann finished 1-1 at singles, also falling to a seeded opponent.
At Pickerington, Newark’s Linus Lininger and Wes Arnold each won a singles match, and both fell as did Viktor Gleckler, who had a bye, in the second round. Grayson Boyer and Will Bolte won a doubles match.
