After a rough 2025 campaign, the Miami Dolphins have been trying to move quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in a trade this offseason, but with no deal materializing, the team has made a decision.
On Monday, the Dolphins announced that they’ll release Tagovailoa after the start of the new league year. With that announcement, new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan released a statement.
“I recently informed Tua and his representation that we are going to move in a new direction at the quarterback position and will be releasing him after the start of the new league year,” Sullivan said. “As I shared with Tua, I have great respect for the person and player he is. On behalf of the Miami Dolphins, I expressed our gratitude for his many contributions, both on the field and in the community, during his six seasons in Miami.
“As we move forward, we will be focused on infusing competition across the roster and establish a strong foundation for this team as we work towards building a sustained winner.”
Miami originally took Tagovailoa with pick No. 5 overall in the 2020 NFL draft out Alabama. Over the last six years, he’s led the team to a 44-32 record in his 76 starts while completing 68% of his passes for 18,166 yards, 120 touchdowns and 59 interceptions.
This release leaves the Dolphins with a $99 million dead cap hit that will likely be spread over two seasons.
Now, the Dolphins have Quinn Ewers, Zach Wilson and Cam Miller at the position on their roster, so they’ll need to add a cheap veteran or a draft pick to compete for the starting job.
