The Miami Dolphins aren’t concerned about the thumb and hip injuries that limited quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in practice Wednesday, and don’t anticipate needing to turn to Zach Wilson in a Week 6 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
“I can’t remember exactly how it was [that Tagovailoa got injured], but ultimately he’s working through stuff for the week and we’re not overall concerned for Sunday,“ Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith told reporters Thursday. “We’re working through the process to Sunday, but we’re not anticipating any setbacks for him for playing.
“Both [injuries] are just parts of when you’re playing quarterback, there’s contact that comes. But ultimately we’re working through and not really anticipating anything as far as Sunday and hindering his performance.”
Tagovailoa, 27, has missed at least four games in all but one of his seasons as the Dolphins’ starting quarterback. Last season, Miami was 2-4 in its six games without Tagovailoa, who missed four games early in the year due to a concussion and the last two of the season due to a hip injury.
In the offseason, the Dolphins signed former New York Jets top five draft pick Zach Wilson to be their new backup. But after five weeks, Wilson’s only action came in the final minutes of a blowout loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
After starting his season with four interceptions and a lost fumble in the first three weeks, Tagovailoa and the Dolphins didn’t turn the ball over at all in Weeks 4 and 5.
