What is Waffle House?
Waffle House, founded in 1955, combined fast food speed and table service convenience and made its wide variety of menu items — with a heavy focus on breakfast — available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
Waffle House has become famous for its inevitable presence along highways in the South and Midwest, its jukeboxes playing Waffle House music, and countless memes on social media.
What is the Waffle House Index?
In Florida especially, Waffle Houses are often used to gauge the severity of a storm in what’s known as the Waffle House Index. Since the chain prides itself on staying open every day of the year no matter what, if the local Waffle House is closed, things are really, really bad.
A journalist named Matt Dellinger noticed that you could therefore map closed Waffle House locations to see how bad a storm was, and Craig Fugate, the former administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), gave it the name and noted it was a useful indicator of how a given community is responding during or after a disaster.
Under the Index, green means the restaurant is serving a full menu and things are good. Yellow means a limited menu due to low food supplies or the restaurant is running on generator power. Red means the restaurant is closed, which means the area is unsafe due to severe flooding or damage. The chain has leaned into it and regularly posts updates on social media during extreme weather.
