More severe weather seems to be on the way for central and eastern parts of the United States, the same parts that have seen a recent onslaught of severe weather week after week.
Florida will see rain and possible thunderstorms associated with this latest round of severe weather on Sunday and possibly into early next week, but it isn’t currently at high risk of seeing strong storms.
Instead, Florida and the rest of the Southeast will experience a heat dome where temperatures could reach between 10-20 degrees above historical averages.
Atmospheric river could trigger up to 4 months of rain in less than a week over the Central US
The Central U.S. is bracing for a third round of severe storms in as many weeks where rain and flooding will be the biggest potential threats.
An atmospheric river, which AccuWeather describes as as moisture plume that will “behave like a tropical storm moving slowly across the area” will cause torrential downpours over the middle of the country for nearly a week.
“There is the potential for up to four months’ worth of rain to fall in five days along portions of a 1,000-mile-long swath,” AccuWeather wrote in its latest weather forecast.
“Should the amount of rain occur that we anticipate over the middle of the nation, it would exceed the 500 to 1,000-year average,” AccuWeather Senior Storm Warning Meteorologist William Clark said, “Truly, the potential is there for a historic flash flooding event.”
Parts of the Florida Panhandle, from the Pensacola area to Tallahassee, will see a chance of showers and thunderstorms associated with the latest round of storms on Sunday and Monday.
The National Weather Service Mobile office’s latest forecast discussion indicates a possibility for strong to severe thunderstorms during this time.
Heat dome over Florida will break next week
Florida, along with the rest of the southeastern United States, has experienced some unseasonably warm temperatures thanks to a dome of building heat, but that should dissipate early next week.
The Pensacola area has seen temperatures as high as 9.1 degrees above historical norms this week. Low temperatures are expected to be as high as 72 degrees before dropping into the upper 40s and low 50s, which are more normal for April.
