As many continue to speculate about what Travis Hunter’s playing time will look like in Year 2 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, we have a new prediction from NFL.com’s Eric Edholm.
Edholm recently put together his list of five players or teams that will “redefine the narrative” in 2026. Coming in at No. 5 was Hunter, who Edholm predicts will “emerge more on one side of the ball.”
In short, Edholm sees there being a far greater opportunity on defense for Hunter to make an impact.
“It certainly feels like there’s a lane toward claiming the starting outside CB spot opposite Montaric Brown,” Edholm wrote. “I thought after a few trials by fire against the Bengals and Texans, Hunter settled down and played pretty well on defense — better than he did on offense — before getting hurt.”
That assessment does make sense, given the construction of the Jaguars roster.
Presumably, Hunter will start at cornerback this season. One could also look at the Jaguars’ offense, which features Brian Thomas Jr., Parker Washington, and Jakobi Meyers at wide receiver, not to mention that the stage is set for Jacksonville to utilize more two and three-tight-end sets this season.
Edholm also made it clear that he does believe that Hunter will continue to play both ways, which James Gladstone and Liam Coen have made known is going to be the case. However, rather than Hunter seeing the bulk of his snaps come on offense, which was the case last season, Edholm anticipates more reps coming on defense this season.
That’s a safe guess to make. That said, I think what’s being lost in this overall conversation — and I’m not only referring to Edholm, but in general — is that this will remain a fluid situation. The weekly matchups and in-game situations could dictate strongly what Hunter’s snap counts look like, with those totals ebbing and flowing throughout the season.
The Jaguars will remain flexible throughout this process.
