Big Cypress wildfire forces campground closures, caution on I75

Easter weekend campers in Big Cypress National Preserve may face a change of plans because of a wildfire.

Authorities with Big Cypress reported a wildfire in the northwest corner of the preserve, north of Interstate 75, on April 3 that prompted evacuations of some campgrounds.

The Hilux wildfire was reported to initially involve around 150 acres.

The Florida Highway Patrol on April 4 said it is monitoring the wildfire in the area of I-75 at State Road 29, but all lanes of the interstate remain open and visibility is good.

Drivers are urged to use caution by reducing their speed and remaining alert for any changes in driving conditions.

Campgrounds evacuated and closed include Bear Island, Gator Head and Pink Jeep campgrounds, according to a post on Big Cypress’ website.

Trails in the immediate area also were closed.

“Visitors should use caution and remain clear of the area,” according to the post.

Big Cypress is 720,000 acres in eastern Collier County and north of Everglades National Park. It is about 17 miles east of Everglades City.
