In a few weeks, Jonathan Hernandez will trade his maroon and gold uniform for some red, white and blue gear.
Bethune-Cookman’s head coach will serve as a manager during USA Baseball Collegiate National Team training camp. The staff was announced Monday.
Hernandez will lead the Stripes Team in the program’s annual Stars vs. Stripes series from June 29 to July 3 at various locations across North Carolina. It will feature 56 of the country’s premier non-draft-eligible collegiate players.
He will be joined by Butch Chaffin (assistant coach), Michael Choice (first base coach), Dan Hartleb (bench/hitting coach), LaTroy Hawkins (pitching coach), Joe McGowan (bullpen catcher) and Dave Tollett (third base coach).
After training camp, the Stripes staff will continue with select players on a College National Team Prospects squad. They will face the Appalachian League Select Team in a Fourth of July matchup in Kannapolis, North Carolina.
“We are excited about the coaching staff we have put together for this year’s Collegiate National Team training camp,” said Eric Campbell, general manager of USA Baseball’s collegiate and professional national clubs. “This is a strong group of coaches who will be able to provide our players with a world-class experience this summer.”
Bethune-Cookman hired Hernandez before the 2019 season. This spring, the Wildcats claimed their first SWAC championship, advanced to the Tallahassee Regional of the NCAA Tournament and finished 37-23.
