Travis Hunter spends entire day on defense as Jaguars have light practice

Jacksonville Jaguars two-way player Travis Hunter spent the entirety of the day with the defense during Day 17 of training camp.

Hunter is continuing to root himself with Anthony Campanile’s group as the team enters the final week of practice in the preseason. Hunter was listed as a starter on defense and as a backup on offense on the team’s unofficial depth chart.

The Jaguars are following that layout on the field as his reps on offense have decreased over the last few weeks. Hunter didn’t get time with the offense even as the Jaguars are down a starting receiver with Jakobi Meyers still sporting a brace on his right hand.

Granted, the team went half speed in a “jog through” period to end the day. Still, it shows what the Jaguars are prioritizing with the second-year player.

How many snaps did Travis Hunter have?

Hunter had 26 total reps to start the final week of training camp. He had 20 reps in 11-on-11 competition and six reps in 7-on-7 play.

He was targeted several times in coverage during the practice, helping to force an incompletion while covering Brian Thomas Jr. on what would’ve been a difficult catch near the back corner of the endzone. He almost came away with an interception of a Trevor Lawrence pass, but the ball ricocheted off Hunter’s facemask.

Hunter also got the chance to get coached by defensive backs coach Matt Araujo in real time, something he didn’t often get earlier in camp because he’d switch to offense after coming off the field on defense.

Hunter has recorded 185 snaps on defense and 64 on offense in 11-on-11 periods to this point in training camp. He’s had 24 defensive reps and 10 offensive reps in 7-on-7 periods. That’s a total of 249 snaps in 11-on-11 periods and 34 reps in 7-on-7 competition through 17 days of training camp.

Those numbers do not include the joint practice with the New Orleans Saints as no practice figures were recorded there.
