Baby girl in critical condition after pool incident in Florida

A 20-month-old girl is in critical condition May 20 after being found the evening before submerged in a pool, according to Port St. Lucie Police.

Police about 9 p.m. May 19 went to the 3200 block of Southwest Crumpacker Street regarding a “reported drowning,” the agency stated.

A preliminary investigation determined a 19-year-old family member might have left a sliding glass door ajar after opening it to let the family dogs outside.

“At some point thereafter, the 20-month-old female child exited the residence unnoticed and was later discovered submerged in a detached above-ground swimming pool located in the backyard of the residence,” police stated.

The child’s father found the girl, and he alerted the mother. The mother started CPR and yelled for help.

A neighbor heard the calls for assistance and phoned 911.

The girl was taken to Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital in Port St. Lucie before being flown to another medical facility.

Police stated the amount of time the girl was unaccounted for before being discovered is under investigation.
