An Atlantis man has been charged with DUI manslaughter in the hit-and-run death in December of a pedestrian pushing a wheelchair, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.
Jesus Rene Roa, 54, also was charged with leaving the scene of a crash causing death, DUI property damage, and driving in violation of a license restriction. He was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on June 13.
On Dec. 21, Roa was driving southbound on the 6000 block of Old Congress Road in suburban Boynton Beach just before 2 a.m. At the same time, Robert Elsmore, 60, of Jupiter, was pushing a wheelchair close to the center line in the middle of the road, a sheriff’s office report said.
The driver’s-side corner of Roa’s 2000 Honda Odyssey struck Elsmore’s back, sending him and the wheelchair to the southeast. Roa fled the site of the accident heading south, deputies said.
Elsmore was pronounced dead at the scene.
