Pensacola police are investigating a fire that killed at least one person early Dec. 17 in an old paint and body shop.
Officer Mike Wood, the department’s spokesperson, told the News Journal that the abandoned Jones Paint and Body shop caught fire early Wednesday morning and at least one person is dead. In a later release, the PPD said an officer on routine patrol discovered the fire around 3:50 a.m.

Once the Pensacola Fire Department extinguished the fire, personnel discovered the body of an unidentified man inside.
Investigators with the PPD, Office of the State Attorney, state Fire Marshal and the medical examiner are investigating the fire and victim’s cause of death. The PPD also closed eastbound traffic on Cervantes Street from K to J streets due to the fire.
