Missed out on Pride Month activities earlier this month?
It’s not too late to support the LGBQT+ community with a host of events taking place this weekend (June 27-29) across Flagler and Volusia counties as a finale to Pride Month.
Vicky Haley is an action board member with Flagler 50501, a local grassroots group spun out of the national non-violent peace movement. She said the group has planned since the beginning of the year to organize a public gathering with participants holding handmade signs to show support for LGBQT+ rights sometime during June’s Pride Month.
“It’s peaceful sign-waving; we’re following the rules and following the laws and spreading joy and cheer is the message we’re trying to create,” Haley said in a phone interview with The News-Journal. “Some people feel unsafe and feel afraid in our community, and that’s why we’re doing these events.”
The idea was to invite Volusia County residents to join the Palm Coast sign-waving, but as word spread, folks in other communities began organizing similar local demonstrations.
“And these other events just kind of snowballed out of the one we were going to have this weekend,” Haley said.
