Airbnb activates anti-party technology for Memorial Day weekend

Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest travel times of the year, with millions of people packing their bags for beach trips, staycations and long weekend getaways. But if you are planning to stay at an Airbnb, the company says some bookings could face extra scrutiny this holiday weekend.

Ahead of Memorial Day, Airbnb announced it is once again activating its anti-party technology across the United States, including in Florida, to help crack down on unauthorized and disruptive house parties before they happen. The company says the system has already helped block or redirect thousands of potentially high-risk bookings during previous holiday weekends.

“Our investment in anti-party technology, along with clear policies and consequences, reflects our commitment to supporting positive stays and countering the rare few who would try to break the trust our platform and local communities are built on,” said Rog Kaiser, Vice President of Fraud and Safety Operations at Airbnb.

So before you book that last-minute vacation rental, here’s what travelers should know about Airbnb’s Memorial Day weekend rules and restrictions.

Airbnb anti-party technology returns for Memorial Day weekend. What is it?

Airbnb’s anti-party system, first introduced during Memorial Day weekend in 2022, is designed to identify reservations that may carry a higher risk for disruptive parties. Guests flagged by the system may be prevented from booking an entire home listing, though they can still reserve alternative stays like private rooms or hotels.

According to Airbnb, nearly 11,000 people across the U.S. were blocked or redirected from booking entire home listings over Memorial Day weekend last year. In Florida alone, approximately 1,760 people were deterred from booking, including about 100 in Miami and 30 in Orlando.

How common are parties held at Airbnb’s?

Despite the holiday concerns, Airbnb says disruptive parties remain uncommon on the platform. The company reported that in 2025, just 0.07% of reservations in Florida resulted in an allegation of a party. Nationwide, fewer than 0.06% of stays led to a reported party incident.

Airbnb warning adults about bookings involving minors. How old do you have to be to book an Airbnb?

Airbnb is also using the holiday weekend to remind users about its rules involving minors. According to the company, people under 18 are not allowed to have Airbnb accounts, and adults cannot book a stay for minors if they do not plan to be present for the trip.

The company says users who violate those rules could lose their account, have upcoming reservations canceled and potentially face financial liability for damages. Airbnb also says account holders could face additional consequences if law enforcement becomes involved after a disruptive party.

Other Airbnb safety measures travelers should know about

In addition to the anti-party technology, Airbnb says it uses machine learning tools year-round to identify potentially high-risk reservations. The company also highlighted several safety resources currently in place, including:

According to Airbnb, the goal of the measures is to reduce disruptive gatherings while helping create safer stays during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.
