A much-anticipated performance by singer Nicole Scherzinger highlighted the annual gala of the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts.
“Much anticipated” being politespeak for “kept the audience for waiting for 40 minutes while she had a diva tantrum about something or the other.”
The wait was worth it. Both the voice and the face from which it floated were magnificent.

“The Conjurer’s Ball: An Evening of Illusion and Magic: took place March 5 at Kravis Center.
Kristen Lambert and Renay Meyer were chairwomen for the evening, which began with a reception in the Cohen Pavilion ithat included cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and strolling magicians who performed close-up illusions, card tricks, and mind reading.
We skipped the last part. Ain’t nothing there but photos of our boyfriends Ben, Jerry, Ernest and Julio.
After the reception, the crowd moved to Dreyfoos Hall for Scherzinger’s display of her Grammy- and Tony-honored talents.
“Nicole Scherzinger’s performance was show-stopping, and that same sense of wonder is what we aim to create for the thousands of students who visit the Kravis Center each year,” said William Meyer, chairman emeritus of the Kravis Center and gala co-chairman. “Many students experience live theater for the first time, and the generosity of our guests tonight helps keep that spark alive.”
Following the performance, the 500-plus guests moved to the Gimelstob Ballroom ― where dramatic lighting and fog effects added to the magic theme ― for dinner, tableside visits from strolling magicians, and dancing to the Marcia Mitchell Band..
“The Kravis Center Gala is always extraordinary, but this year felt truly magical,” said David Lambert, Kravis Center board chair and, with Meyer, gala co-chairman. “It was inspiring to see our community come together in support of the arts and to enjoy a little fun with illusion along the way.”
Tom and Sherry Barrat served as honorary chairman and honorary chairwoman.
Proceeds from the evening support of the Kravis Center’s artistic and education programs, where students of all ages can participate in a variety of workshops, classes and special events, as well as free and reduced-price tickets to those who might not otherwise have the chance to experience live performances.
