Six North Port High School (NPHS) students were arrested, and one was seriously injured after a fight at school.
The student was ground transported and has since been released from the hospital, North Port Police officials shared. The investigation into the fight is ongoing, and additional arrests are possible. Several other students were expelled from the high school due to their involvement, Sarasota County school officials shared.
Shurley has asked parents to speak with students about not becoming spectators during fights.
“Fighting, encouraging fights, filming altercations or escalating conflicts directly contradicts the positive culture we are building,” Shurley shared in an email to families and staff. “This behavior threatens the safety of our school and will not be normalized. When students choose to surround themselves with this type of behavior by promoting it, recording it, or remaining in the middle of it signals acceptance. That choice can be just as damaging and can carry serious ramifications.”
