3 To Know: Alligator Alcatraz winding down? Worker has fatal fall, more

1. ALLIGATOR ALCATRAZ: Congressman says detainee numbers about half vs April

Alligator Alcatraz operations are indeed winding down, according to Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost who made his third visit to the immigrant detention center last week.

Airplanes tracked via Flight Aware show at least 12 flights this week leaving the immigrant detention center going to other facilities.

“What I saw was a facility that is being wound down and shut down,” Frost said in a video he posted on X (formerly Twitter) after leaving Alligator Alcatraz in Ochopee in Collier County. “First of all, they aren’t getting any new people. They are just sending people to other facilities.”

Frost, an Orlando Democrat who represents Florida’s 10th Congressional District, is the first Millennial elected to Congress and the son of a Cuban immigrant.

2. WORKER DEAD: Falls off ladder removing store sign

A 38-year-old Naples man died after falling off a ladder and landing on his head outside the former Saks Off Fifth store in Naples.

On May 21, the Naples Police Department responded to a medical emergency at 4135 9th Street North, where a Saks Off Fifth that closed down in February because of bankruptcy.

Officers found Verlincks Sylvestre on the ground next to a ladder and multiple pieces of sheet metal, according to a police report.

Sylvestre was transported to the hospital but pronounced dead less than an hour later.

One witness saw Sylvestre fall off the ladder and strike the pavement headfirst after a piece of metal he was trying to pull off the building began to slip.

The reporting officer observed a large area of blood in front of the store, the report states.Sylvestre was working for the company Facilities Pro-Sweep at the time.

Facilities Pro-Sweep did not immediately respond to requests for commen. According to the police report, a report has been completed with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The report has not been made publicly available by OSHA. – Tayeba Hussein/USA TODAY Network-Florida
