A woman died Wednesday morning, July 29, after two cars collided and overturned on eastbound Interstate 10, about 15 miles east of Indio, according to the California Highway Patrol. Two other people were seriously injured.
Alexis Dare, 33, of Desert Hot Springs, was identified by the Riverside County coroner’s office as the woman killed in the crash, which happened around 6:55 a.m. west of the Cactus City Rest Area.
A preliminary investigation found that a Kia Forte approached a Tesla Model 3 from behind at a high rate of speed in the left lane, CHP spokesperson Alejandro De Leon said in a press release. The Kia driver did not slow in time “for reasons still under investigation,” and subsequently rear-ended the Tesla.
The impact sent both cars to “veer out-of-control” into the median, where they overturned. Dare, who was riding in the front passenger seat of the Kia, was ejected as the car overturned and died at the scene.
Paramedics took both drivers, who suffered moderate to major injuries, to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.
CHP suspects alcohol or drugs may have contributed to the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
