Safeway is celebrating a milestone anniversary at Northern California stores with week-long promotions shoppers might not want to miss.
The supermarket chain recently announced that it’s celebrating 100 years of serving communities in California and nine other states since its first stores opened in 1926. San Joaquin County is home to six Safeway locations. Just in Stockton, there are two grocery stores on Pacific Avenue and Country Club Boulevard.
“Safeway is woven into the fabric of neighborhoods, bringing generations of families together around the table to share in the joy of food,” said Kelly Mullin, president of Safeway’s Northern California Division, in a statement. “We have evolved alongside the communities we serve while remaining grounded in our commitment to fresh, locally sourced produce, quality products, and the friendliest shopping experience. Reaching this 100-year milestone is a remarkable achievement attributable to the incredible loyalty of our customers.”
To celebrate its century milestone, Safeway is holding a Centennial Shuffle Week that started Wednesday, June 24 and goes through Tuesday, June 30.
The Centennial Shuffle occurs five times a day during the week. These are scheduled for 8 a.m., 10 a.m., noon, 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., company officials said.
Shoppers can locate and line up at a Centennial Shuffle logo and a number on store floors for prizes that range from grocery credits to the giveaway of one of two new sport utility vehicles. Stores also are offering tastings, discounts and ways to show appreciation to its shoppers, the company said.
Among potential prizes are a fresh cut watermelon bowl, fresh baked loaf, cage-free eggs, a purified drinking water bottle packet, rose bouquet, ground beef and whole roasted chicken.
A Safeway spokesperson told The Record on Wednesday, June 24 that all 262 stores in Northern California were participating in the Centennial Shuffle.
Safeway is also donating $100,000 across four of the oldest hunger relief organizations in Northern California. Each nonprofit will receive $25,000 each. The recipients are:

There are six total stores across San Joaquin County.

Safeway’s history
Safeway was founded by Marion Barton (M.B.) Skaggs in 1915, when he purchased a tiny grocery store from his father in American Falls, Idaho.
From there, he grew his business and had opened 428 Skaggs stores by 1926, according to Safeway’s website.
The oldest operating Northern California Safeway is at 2020 Market St. in San Francisco, company officials said. It opened in 1954.
The Safeway name came from stores only accepting cash, as the “safe way,” the company said.
“Today, the company operates over 285 stores across Northern California, Nevada, and Hawaii, under four banners, including Andronico’s, Safeway, Pak N’ Save, and Vons,” the company states.
