William Laird has been selected as superintendent of the Helendale School District, which consists of Helendale Elementary School, Riverview Middle School and the Academy of Careers and Exploration.
The Helendale School District Board of Education announced the unanimous vote to hire Laird during their regular meeting on June 23.
The district said Laird’s hiring came after an extensive search that began in March, which included 14 applicants vying for the position from Northern California, Southern California and Arizona.
Laird, who will begin his position on July 1, has had an extensive career that includes roles as teacher, vice principal, principal and director of educational services, according to district officials.
His work career has included involvement with the Antelope Valley Union High School District, The Master’s University, Desert Christian High School and Hesperia Christian School.
Laird has earned several degrees including his associate’s degree at Victor Valley College, bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the Masters University, and his Doctorate in Education at Cal State University, Northridge.
“With the unanimous hiring of Dr. Laird the district has turned a corner,” Helendale Board President Cindy Hensley. “Laird’s proven leadership and success in raising student achievement for all students has been the hallmark of his career.”
