Few players in football have been as immediately productive as Puka Nacua. A fifth-round pick out of BYU in 2023, Nacua smashed rookie receiving records with 1,486 yards, then followed it up by leading the NFL in receptions (129) and finishing second in receiving yards (1,717) in 2025 for the Los Angeles Rams.
He’s already a two-time Pro Bowler and a former All-Pro, and Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson has pointed to Nacua as the receiver most likely to break his single-season receiving yards record. On the field, there’s no argument. Off the field, that’s a different story, and it’s why analysts believe no Rams player enters 2026 with more riding on the season than Nacua.
Nacua’s off-field conduct has become inseparable from his football future, according to The Athletic’s Atkins.
It might be strange to think of the reigning league leader in receptions as facing a make-or-break season, but that is the case for Nacua and his place on the Rams. For as electric as he was last season, Nacua created distractions off the field among the streamers he attempted to sneak into the Rams’ facility, the fine he paid for criticizing NFL officials twice, the antisemitic dance he performed on the live stream that he later apologized for and a lawsuit he is facing now for allegedly biting a woman while intoxicated on New Year’s Eve. Nacua spent weeks this offseason in a holistic care facility to try to curb some of these issues, and the Rams are making it clear to him that he will need a pattern of strong behavior to undo the concerns in order to earn the payday that his production justifies.
That payday is very much real if Nacua can clean up his image. He’s entering the final year of his rookie deal, set to earn just $7.67 million in 2026, a fraction of his market value. He could rival the $168.6 million deal Jaxon Smith-Njigba signed with the Seattle Seahawks or push toward the guarantees Ja’Marr Chase received from the Cincinnati Bengals. He could, too, be a franchise tag candidate in 2027.
For his part, Nacua has said he wants to stay in Los Angeles long-term. Head coach Sean McVay said something similar earlier this year. But the Rams have made clear that trust needs to be rebuilt before they commit franchise-altering money, and any contract could include language protecting the team from further off-field trouble.
If Nacua stays out of the headlines for the wrong reasons and keeps producing at his usual level, he’s on track to become one of the highest-paid receivers in football. If the pattern of controversy continues, Los Angeles could lean on the franchise tag instead — turning what should be a straightforward business decision into the biggest storyline of his season.
