Why Bears TE Colston Loveland thought he was becoming a Charger

Bears tight end Colston Loveland revealed that he thought the Chargers were going to draft him in 2025.

In a recent appearance on the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast, Loveland revealed that the Chargers were the only team he met with.

” I think Chargers,” Loveland said when asked which other team outside of the Bears was set to draft him.

“That was the only visit I had and coach [Jim] Harbaugh really told me, ‘If you’re there, we’ll grab you.”

Loveland also said he was surprised the Bears selected him that early, as he believed he was going to be drafted by the Chargers.

The Chargers held the No. 22 overall pick in last year’s draft. With that pick, with Loveland no longer available, Los Angeles selected running back Omarion Hampton.

The former Michigan Wolverine was taken No. 10 overall by Chicago and has quickly established himself as one of the top players in his position.

In his rookie season, the 22-year-old recorded 58 receptions for 713 receiving yards, six touchdowns and averaged 12.3 yards per reception. Loveland became the first rookie to lead the team in receiving yards since 1983.

It would have been interesting to see how Mike McDaniel would have used Loveland this upcoming season. Nonetheless, the Chargers still selected a brilliant player in Hampton.

The dynamic running back was great when he was on the field in his rookie season. Hampton was held to nine games due to a fractured left ankle.

As for the 2026 season, Hampton is set to be the clear-cut feature back for the Chargers.
