Bob Chesney is all-in on the family-first approach. The first-year UCLA Bruins coach has made his press runs this summer, with UCLA now less than a month away from beginning the season on the road versus Cal on September, 5th.
Over the course of his media tour, Chesney talked about how his father being his high school football coach, with other family members in a supportive role, and that football and family has always gone hand-in-hand.
As the years moved along, Chesney went from having his dad as his coach, to having his dad be on his staff. Since Chesney was coaching in Division III college football, he’s had Bob Chesney Sr. on the sidelines with him helping get his teams ready to compete. The younger Chesney spoke with the Big Ten Network about what that means to him.
“It started with him coaching with me when I first became a head coach at a Division III school. It was me, two other full-time assistants, and then I had about $15,000 to build the rest of the staff,” Chesney said. “I needed to find some cheap people and my father was free. My brother came along and he was free too, so that was a good start.”
UCLA has given Chesney a much larger budget to build a coaching staff but the familial bond is priceless.
Now the Chesney family will take on the Big Ten Conference, which features some of the very best teams in the country. It won’t be easy for the Chesney’s and the Bruins but this is far from their first rodeo.
