Head coach Jim Harbaugh held a season-ending press conference with general manager Joe Hortiz at The Bolt, where they discussed what he is looking for in the next offensive coordinator.
Here is everything notable that Harbaugh and Hortiz said on Thursday.
Why Greg Roman was fired
Harbaugh didn’t delve into criticisms of Roman that led to him being relieved of his duties.
“A fresh start. A new direction. Greg’s a great football mind, had a lot of success.”
What qualities they’re looking for in the next offensive coordinator
Harbaugh emphasized the need for a strong leader on that side of the ball to elevate the unit’s production, particularly in scoring, after a year of underwhelming output that finished 24th in the league in that department.
“A head coach of the offense. That person that teaches, installs, puts the players in the best position to be successful. And ultimately, scores points, No. 1. We owe that to our team.”
Is Justin Herbert involved in the search?
Harbaugh said that Herbert is not part of the decision-making process for the new hire.
“I have no questions about his ability as a player. He’s not looking to be the GM or the coach. It’s our responsibility to put him in the best position possible.”
What style of offense is wanted?
Harbaugh reiterated his preference for a tough, ground-oriented approach that aligns with his overall coaching philosophy, which prioritizes physicality.
“Physical run game, physical unit that is smart, plays tough, plays physical.”
Is there a certain offensive system they’re looking for?
Harbaugh stressed prioritizing proven results and a clear vision tailored to the Chargers’ offensive personnel, rather than locking into a single playbook or philosophy.
“Wide net being cast…We’re looking for the best one that has a track record, has proven success and can show us his vision for what our offense is going to look like and be like.”
Is there a timeline for when they want to hire the OC?
There is not.
“We’re going to compete for the best candidate, and it is an attractive position.”
