Veterans of the Vietnam War era will be honored during a special breakfast at the Apple Valley Senior Center.
Families and friends are also welcome to attend the National Vietnam War Veterans Day-themed breakfast, scheduled from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on March 28, at the center at 13188 Central Road in Apple Valley.
The breakfast is free and donations will be accepted to cover the costs of the event, which is sponsored by VFW Post 2924, DAV Chapter 92 and the Rotary Club of Apple Valley.
National Vietnam War Veterans Day
Each March 29 is designated as National Vietnam War Veterans Day and is set aside to pay special tribute to the 9 million Americans who served during the Vietnam War era, according to the American Legion.
It also pays tribute to the 58,000 names memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., and to those who never received the recognition they deserved when they returned to America from war.
March 29, 1973, is the day the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam was disestablished and the day the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam.
Also on that day, Operation Homecoming was completed when the last of 591 U.S. prisoners were released and returned to the United States.
