USC quarterbacks coach Luke Huard discusses Jayden Maiava’s improved mindset entering 2025

Entering the 2025 season, redshirt junior Jayden Maiava is USC’s presumptive starter at quarterback. After transferring in from UNLV last year, Maiava started the final four games of 2024 for the Trojans and will look to build on what he started heading into this year.

Having been in USC and head coach Lincoln Riley’s system for a full year now, Maiava’s confidence seems to be much higher now than it was last year. Following Monday morning’s practice, USC quarterbacks coach Luke Huard discussed the quarterback’s improved mindset entering his second season with the Trojans.

“Just in general, his overall confidence,” Huard said. “Response to adverse situations. And I think you can just feel, you know, Jayden being more and more comfortable in his own skin.

“You can just feel an improved and elevated level of confidence with the way that he’s going about his business.”

In his four starts last year, Maiava showed flashes of brilliance, but also struggled with turnovers at times. Whether or not he is able to clean up his play and take his game to the next level could be critical if the Trojans want to accomplish their goals on the field this season.
