Former UCLA quarterback and graduate assistant Brian Callahan was fired as head coach of the Tennessee Titans on Monday following the Titans’ 20-10 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.
Tennessee is 1-5 on the season, with Callahan owning a 4-19 record over his two seasons as the Titans’ head coach. Callahan and the Titans got the first overall pick after a 3-14 season in 2024 which led to the Titans taking quarterback Cam Ward. Ward has shown flashes under Callahan but the offense itself has been a mess, averaging only 13.8 points per game, the second-lowest mark in the NFL.
Callahan never got game action as quarterback for the Bruins but he earned his degree from UCLA in 2006 and then became a graduate assistant for UCLA under Karl Dorrell and Dewayne Walker. After his time in Westwood, Callahan coached at Junipero Serra High School before joining the Denver Broncos staff in 2010. Callahan stayed with the Broncos until 2016 when he joined the Detroit Lions as their quarterbacks coach. Callahan was a quarterback coach for the Lions and the Raiders before becoming the Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator in 2019, a position he’d hold until 2023 before taking the head coaching job with the Titans.
Trouble had been brewing this season for the Titans with Ward calling the team “ass” and Callahan critiquing Ward’s play following Sunday’s loss. Callahan will quickly find himself with a new coaching position in the NFL but former UCLA quarterbacks returning to coach up the offense is all the rave right now if he’d want to return to Westwood.
