Welcome to The Record’s weekly roundup.
Every week, The Record will deliver a quick-hit look at the past week’s sports action — the big games, the best performances and the storylines worth knowing. Baseball, softball and track will anchor the coverage, with other spring sports joining the mix when they make noise.
Track season can be packed with meets, so each week, first-place finishers from at least one competition will be spotlighted.
Call it a digest. Call it a highlight reel. Either way, it’s the fastest way to keep up with San Joaquin County sports without following every score or reading every recap.
With two weeks left in the regular season after this edition, everything is starting to tighten — and the best are beginning to stand out.
The best players. The best teams.
Some have already locked up league titles. Others are showing why they’re Division I talent. And a few are proving there’s more than one “best.”
Boys volleyball is in the mix this week, too.
That said, welcome to the April 13-18 roundup.
Baseball
Oakdale 2, Central Catholic 1 (April 13)
Big-time moment. Big-time performance. University of Georgia commit Landon Schutte went 6.1 innings, gave up seven hits, allowed one earned run and struck out nine against a top-three team in the section and a top-50 team in the state.
St. Mary’s 4, Lodi 0 (April 15)
Start after start, it’s been the same. Two or three hits — every time. Mississippi State commit Dax Hardcastle had already done it in all five outings, including 15- and 14-strikeout games. So which one stands out? That’s the problem — it’s getting harder to tell. This one belongs in the conversation, a one-hit complete game with eight strikeouts.
Ripon 11, Orestimba 0 (April 15)
Five innings was all Hunter Weber needed. The senior delivered a no-hitter, striking out nine and becoming the sixth pitcher in the Sac-Joaquin Section to reach that mark this season.
Edison 9, Bear Creek 3 (April 17)
For nearly a decade, there was no answer. Since joining the SJAA in 2015, Edison hadn’t beaten Bear Creek, with losses often by five runs or more. Until now. Santiago Moreno struck out 10, Izaak Navarrete had three RBIs, and the Stewart brothers, Isaac and Roman, each drove in two.
Orange Lutheran 7, St. Mary’s 0 (April 18)
That’s the stage winning the NorCal Boras Classic brings — the Boras Classic state championship game. At Stephen Schott Stadium, home of Santa Clara University, the gap in rankings showed. St. Mary’s, the best team in the Sac-Joaquin Section and a top-30 team in California, fell to the No. 1 team in the state and No. 2 in the nation, according to MaxPreps.
Softball
Tokay 9, Bear Creek 3 (April 14)
With three teams tied at 7-1 atop the SJAA standings, something had to give. Tokay stepped in and took one down, backed by two RBIs apiece from Cloe Alves, Annabelle Sikich and Ava Pasqualicchio.
Central Catholic 14, Oakdale 2 (April 14)
Round one came down to a run. Round two didn’t. Central Catholic, first in the VOL, turned a 2-1 game from March 17 into a runaway, breaking it open with nine runs in the fourth inning. Regardless, Oakdale still sits in second and a full game ahead of Manteca at 7-2.
Tracy 10, Merrill West 0 (April 16)
Make it win No. 11. Long Beach State commit Hayden Fell now has 11 in 14 starts — and it’s not just the offense behind her. This marked her 12th game without allowing an earned run. With a 0.43 ERA in 64.2 innings, she added another dominant outing, a one-hit complete game.
Kimball 13, Lodi 6 (April 16)
Tied for second in the TCAL. Not after this. Kimball piled up 19 hits and looked every bit like the county’s No. 2 team.
Tokay 12, Edison 1 (April 16)
The other co-leader fell too. Edison, tied atop the SJAA at 7-1, ran into Brooklyn Schaede, who went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and threw five innings of three-hit ball. Sophia Galletti added four RBIs.
Boys Volleyball
Bear Creek 3, Edison 1 (April 13)
No buildup was needed — this decided it. With the win, Bear Creek moves into position to share the SJAA title with Edison, barring any major upset.
Mountain House 3, Manteca 0 (April 15)
Said it once, proved it again. Mountain House reinforced its place as the best team in the VOL — and in the county. Manteca, widely viewed as the clear-cut No. 2, was swept after a 3-2 loss on March 23 in the first meeting.
St. Mary’s 3, Tracy 1 (April 16)
Had Tracy won, it would’ve held sole possession of first in the TCAL. Instead, the loss creates a tie at the top with Lodi, while St. Mary’s sits just one game back.
