Welcome to The Record’s weekly roundup.
Every week, The Record will deliver a quick-hit look at the past week’s sports action — the big games, the best performances and the storylines worth knowing. Baseball, softball and track will anchor the coverage, with other spring sports joining the mix when they make noise.
Track is usually part of the weekly mix, but with the TCAL, SJAA and VOL all hosting their championship meets, we put together a separate piece highlighting every first-place finisher across all three.
Call it a digest. Call it a highlight reel. Either way, it’s the fastest way to keep up with San Joaquin County sports without following every score or reading every recap.
This is it — the final spring sports roundup.
League titles in baseball, boys volleyball and track and field have been decided, with softball already settled entering the final week.
From here on out, coverage will shift to individual sport roundups. But for now, one last look.
League titles were claimed. So were the hopes of many others.
Some made history. Others fell short. And a few kept their storybook runs alive.
Boys volleyball has reached the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section postseason and is also in this week’s mix.
That said, welcome to the April 13-18 roundup.
Baseball
Linden 5, Summerville 1 (April 28)
Three teams entered tied. Only one would finish on top. Linden took control with a win over Summerville, powered by a complete game and 10 strikeouts from Marco Holguin. When Summerville knocked off Bret Harte three days later, the path cleared — and Linden had its back-to-back MLL title.
Woodland Christian 8, Edison 2 (April 29)
The history is already there. Now comes the reality check. Edison, fresh off its first league title in 84 years, stepped into a test against Woodland Christian — a program with back-to-back Section titles and no league losses since 2011. It was the kind of challenge the Vikings will see in the playoffs, and a preview of what awaits.
St. Mary’s 4, Lincoln 0 (April 29)
Five straight TCAL titles. Mississippi State signee Dax Harcastle threw a complete game with 12 strikeouts, and Dylan Patton added his first career home run against his former team as St. Mary’s finished off a sweep of rival Lincoln. It was another reminder of why the Rams are the best team in the Sac-Joaquin Section and the No. 1 seed in Division I.
Ripon Christian 12, Sonora 2 (April 30)
History kept building. Win No. 25 set a new program record, breaking the previous mark of 23. It was also the 16th straight win and, more importantly, the one that secured Ripon Christian’s first TVL title since joining the league just last year.
Tokay 16, Weston Ranch 3 (May 1)
Almost everyone was gone. Only four players returned from last year’s championship team. It did not matter. Tokay showed that culture outlasts experience, turning a new roster into another title and securing back-to-back SJAA championships, sharing this one with Edison.
Softball
BHCPA 7, Venture Academy 4 (April 27)
A first was right there. Venture Academy had never won a league title and, since starting in 2007, has only had one winning season — last year, when it finished behind BHCPA in the CCAA standings. Despite the loss, it still controls its own path, sitting just one game back of BHCPA with another chance at a title looming on May 6.
Hughson 2, Ripon 1 (April 28)
There was still a path. Ripon entered two games behind first-place Hughson, knowing a win would at least keep the door open. That door is now closed. With the loss, Ripon’s chase for a fifth straight TVL title is officially over.
Central Catholic 13, Manteca 8 (April 28)
This one had more to do with the standings than the result itself. After tying the season series with Oakdale and matching them for second place, Manteca fell behind with the loss. Oakdale now holds second alone, while Manteca drops to third.
Kimball 7, St. Mary’s 1 (April 28)
After splitting the first two meetings, Kimball left no doubt once again. Following a 5-0 shutout on April 13, sophomore Briana Quintero dominated again, throwing her ninth complete game with seven strikeouts and one earned run allowed. Senior Emma Coronado went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and freshman Viviana Aguilar added three RBIs.
Tokay 12, Chavez 5 (May 1)
The turnaround is no longer a question. It is real. Brooklyn Schaede delivered a complete game with seven strikeouts and one earned run, moving to 107 on the season just days after hitting 100. It all led to back-to-back SJAA titles for a program that had not seen a winning season in eight years.
Boys Volleyball
No. 2 Ripon Christian 3, No. 7 McNair 0 (May 1)
Championship programs do not change. Ripon Christian has won three of the last four Section titles and has not lost a league match since 2018. That consistency showed again in the quarterfinals, where it handled McNair in straight sets, 25-12, 25-20 and 25-18.
No. 5 Sierra 3, No. 4 Christian Brothers 1 (May 1)
Upset alert. After handling No. 12 Rio Linda in the first round, Sierra followed it up with a four-set win over No. 4 Christian Brothers to advance to the second semifinal in program history.
No. 3 Lathrop 3, No. 6 Twelve Bridges 0 (May 1)
Back where it has been before. Lathrop returned to the semifinals for the first time since 2023 and now has its sights set on something bigger — a second section title, and the first since 2022.
No. 4 River Island 3, No. 5 John Adams Academy 1 (May 1)
Only two years in, and River Islands keeps raising the bar. The win was No. 20 this season and the second playoff victory in program history, building off a 3-2 win over No. 13 Ripon just two days earlier.
