Jonathan Kuminga’s contract situation was an unavoidable topic throughout the Golden State Warriors’ media day. Multiple members of the Warriors roster were questioned regarding Kuminga’s standoff with the franchise, despite receiving multiple contract offers this summer. Kuminga is reportedly weighing his options as the deadline on his qualifying offer (October 1) draws closer.
During his news conference, Stephen Curry addressed the media and shared his thoughts on his teammates’ well-documented standoff. Curry also shared some of his expectations for Kuminga once he eventually returns to the team and begins to ramp up for the 2025-26 season.
“Negotiations are hard,” Curry said. “We all know that the idea of everybody’s situation is a little different. Everybody comes up with whatever narrative they want to. It’s how business kind of goes. Some things are pretty straightforward. Some things aren’t. This is definitely in the hard conversation category, but when he comes and he’s here, he should be a professional and do exactly what he expects to do, and take advantage of his opportunities to help us win everybody who’s in the locker room. That’s what you’re committed to doing. So I don’t have any concerns that he’ll approach it that way, and that’s what we expect.”
Despite Kuminga’s standoff, the Warriors have begun to round out the roster. Multiple players have either committed to signing with the franchise or have already put pen to paper. Al Horford is the marquee addition this summer, as he will solve a long-standing issue in the middle of the court.
Nevertheless, all eyes will be on Kuminga and how he re-integrates with the team in the coming days. Of course, there will also be murmurs regarding a potential trade. However, if Kuminga can stay locked in, and remain committed to giving his all to the Warriors, it’s unlikely he will have anything other than a warm welcome once he’s back with his teammates.
