Sobriety checkpoint planned in Apple Valley

Deputies plan to hold a checkpoint to screen drivers for sobriety in Apple Valley later this month.

The checkpoint is scheduled to take place from 6 p.m. Friday, April 11, until 2 a.m. the following morning at an undisclosed location within the town, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Locations of checkpoint are picked based on prior histories of DUI-related crashed, the department said in a written statement.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Deputy Stephan Esparza stated. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

Officials reminded the public that in addition to alcohol, prescription medications and even drugs available over-the-counter may have potential to cause impairment.

“While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal,” the statement added.

On average, first-time DUI offenders face $13,000 in fines, along with a suspended driver license.

Funding for the checkpoint comes from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
