Cornerback was always seen as a position the Los Angeles Rams would address this offseason, knowing Cobie Durant and Ahkello Witherspoon were both free agents. They attacked that spot aggressively, taking a big swing on a trade for Kansas City Chiefs star Trent McDuffie.
In the blink of an eye, cornerback went from a perceived weakness to an undeniable strength of this team. Keeping McDuffie paired with Jaylen Watson gives the Rams their best cornerback tandem in years after this position was a big reason they came up short in 2025.

How he got here
Early in the offseason, the Rams saw a chance to acquire McDuffie and they took it. They traded picks in the first, fifth and sixth rounds this year, as well as a 2027 third-rounder in exchange for McDuffie, giving up a total of four selections to land their guy.
The Rams then signed him to a four-year, $124 million contract, ensuring he’ll be in Los Angeles for the long haul.
He originally came into the NFL as a first-round pick by the Chiefs in 2022.

Projected role
When the Rams acquired McDuffie, Sean McVay raved about his versatility. McDuffie has played outside and in the slot throughout his career, and that’s expected to continue with the Rams. Los Angeles will utilize him in several positions, depending on how the opponent is trying to attack the defense.
If it’s a team with a top-end slot receiver, McDuffie will probably play inside more. If the opponent has an elite outside receiver, we’ll probably see McDuffie match up out there. He could even see reps at safety if needed, which he said he’d be willing to play.
McDuffie will be on the field for just about every snap if healthy, being a chess piece for Los Angeles to deploy in a variety of ways.
One thing to know
McDuffie is an outstanding tackler for a cornerback, always wrapping up and getting his guy on the ground. According to Pro Football Focus, he had an 83.1 tackle grade last season, which was second-best among corners. The year before, he ranked third with a grade of 80.0.
His tackling shows up in run support, too, ranking ninth among cornerbacks with a run defense grade of 78.5 last season, too.
Why he’s important
The Rams gave up way too many yards through the air last season, in large part because their cornerbacks weren’t good enough. And in today’s NFL, you need talented corners in order to succeed; a good scheme just isn’t enough.
Los Angeles now has two quality cornerbacks in McDuffie and Watson, with McDuffie being particularly important thanks to his position flexibility. With him and Quentin Lake, the Rams can mix up their DBs to create the best possible matchups.
And McDuffie brings a toughness to the defense, too. He’s not afraid to blitz, wrap up running backs or press at the line of scrimmage, displaying impressive physicality for the position. That will help set the tone for the rest of the defense, while his coverage skills will force quarterbacks to hold the ball and lead to more sacks.
McDuffie does a lot of things well, which makes him such a crucial part of the equation defensively.
