Skateboarding event Jackalope Block Party Ventura is set for this weekend May 1-3 in downtown Ventura.
The free, three-day event is poised to gather 15,000 attendees and skateboarding fans, according to a news release. The block party, happening at the intersection of California and Main streets, is scheduled to be streamed live as well.
Skateboarders plan to perform on a 13.5-foot, U-shaped halfpipe at that downtown Ventura intersection to vie for more than $22,000 in prize money, the release says.
The event is set to kick off May 1 with a vert skateboarding session at 5 p.m. and continues with various practice and best-trick sessions that ends at 9:30 p.m., according to an event webpage.
On May 2, a vert practice skateboarding session is set to start at 11 a.m. with a mix of other practice, final, qualification, demo sessions slated until 8:45 p.m. On May 3, a practice session is scheduled from 9 a.m., followed by other practice, final sessions and a podium ceremony wrapping up around 5:30 p.m.
Details are at visitventuraca.com/jackalope.
The event features a demo by widely known skateboarders, including Steve Caballero, Bob Burnquist, Christian Hosoi, Pierre-Luc Gagnon, known as PLG, and Elliot Sloan in a legends session May 2 from 8-8:45 p.m.
Last year, the Ventura City Council agreed to earmark $150,000 for public safety, permits, city staff time and infrastructure needs to host the event, as previously reported.
The city has hosted the sports event X games, which included skateboarding, in 2023 and 2024.
Jackalope hosts a larger three-day event in the city of Virginia Beach, Virginia that features a wider variety of sports. Virginia Beach invested $1 million into the event and earned more than $600,000 in sales tax revenue in the past, according to Ventura city officials.
After this weekend, the event moves to Virginia Beach May 29-31 and then to Mississauga, Ontario in Canada July 10-12.
