Six Flags is closing 2 parks, including in California. See where.

Regional amusement park operator Six Flags is closing parks in California and Maryland.

The company, now based in Charlotte, North Carolina, after its merger with Cedar Point, is North America’s largest regional amusement park operator with 27 amusement parks, 15 water parks, and nine resort properties. Planned park closures were announced in May 2025.

Six Flags President and CEO Richard A. Zimmerman called the closures a “difficult decision” made as a part of the company’s long-term growth plan. Here’s everything we know about the parks that are set to close, with first dates coming in 2025.

Here’s a look at which parks are closing, when and why.

Which Six Flags parks are closing?

Six Flags California’s Great America of Santa Clara and Six Flags America and its accompanying water park, Hurricane Harbor, in Bowie, Maryland, are closing. The closing of the Maryland location, the only one in the state, was a “difficult decision” due to the park not being a “strategic fit” with the company’s long-range goals.

California’s Great America in Santa Clara was already on the chopping block. In 2022, it was announced that the Santa Clara amusement park would shut down no later than 11 years after a Bay Area real estate developer bought the park’s land for $310 million.

How many parks does Six Flags operate in California?

Six Flags Entertainment operates the following in California, according to its park map:

When will the Six Flags theme parks close?

The California park will close at the end of the 2027 season. The park, then owned by Cedar Fair, was originally set to close in 2033, according to CBS News, but that date was bumped when Six Flags and Cedar Fair merged in 2024, in part due to the park’s expiring lease, according to USA TODAY reporting.

The Maryland parks, the only in the state, will close for good at the end of the 2025 season, with the location’s final day on Nov. 2, 2025. The wind-down will begin in August, with guests last welcome on Sept. 6 to Hurricane Harbor, although the park will remain open through Fright Fest.

Is Six Flags shutting down completely?

Six Flags Entertainment Corp., now merged with Cedar Fair, isn’t shutting down entirely, but the combined company will permanently close two parks.
