Sinkhole closes major Oxnard intersection, redirects traffic

A sinkhole formed underneath a major Oxnard intersection on Sept. 18, closing the roadway with heavy traffic expected.

Officers with the Oxnard Police Department responded to a call of the asphalt cracking and bulging at the intersection of Oxnard Boulevard and East Date Street, said police Sgt. Martin Cook.

Firefighters and personnel with the city of Oxnard found water flowing underneath the asphalt of the intersection and extending to a nearby sidewalk, causing a sinkhole to form, authorities said.

No injuries were reported and no vehicles had fallen into the sinkhole, authorities said.

The intersection will remain closed with police redirecting traffic around the busy roadway, authorities said. Road closures include: northbound traffic at Oxnard Boulevard and Statham Boulevard, southbound at Oxnard Boulevard and Commercial Avenue, northbound at Date Street and California Street and southbound at Date Street and Pine Street.

Residents of the area are also advised to take alternative routes, authorities said.
