The Silverado boys swimming team had a strong showing at the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 championships with an eighth-place finish on Thursday.
Silverado sent three individuals and a pair of relay teams to the finals, hosted by Mt. San Antonio College. Last season, the boys finished 30th overall and 55th in 2023.
“Proud is an understatement,” said coach Laura Gonzales. “These student-athletes pour their hearts into every practice, making countless sacrifices for the time spent in the water. This victory belongs to the entire team. Young, determined and hungry for more. The best is yet to come.”
The 4×100-yard freestyle relay team of Tommy Fernandez, Cameron McIlory, Sebastian Langel-Viveros and John Michael Holquin finished seventh place overall with a mark of 3 minutes, 33.17 seconds, shaving over three seconds off from their time two days prior at the prelims.
The 4×50 medley relay team of Blake Gonzales, Fernandez, McIlroy and Langel-Viveros captured first place, swimming in the B Final, which is 10th place overall. They combined for a time of 1:48.86, shaving nearly three seconds off their prelims mark.
The top 18 marks from the prelims, held May 6, advanced to the championships and were split into two races — the A and B Finals.
McIlroy and Fernandez both qualified for the championships in a pair of individual races.
Swimming in the 100 butterfly B Final, McIlroy took first place, 10th overall, with a time of 55.70. He finished in ninth place overall in the 200 individual medley race with a time of 2:08.26.
Fernandez finished 11th overall in the 100 freestyle with a time 51.46. He also finished 13th overall in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 1:53.09.
Langel-Viveros qualified in the 500 freestyle and finished 16th overall with a time of 5:10.04.
Apple Valley’s Jolene Caballero was the lone girl from the High Desert to reach the Div. 4 championships. She finished 18th overall in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:36.51.
Silverado’s Isabel Maust also qualified for the championships. She will be competing Friday at Mt. SAC in the 50 and 100 freestyle races.
