A Riverside County Sheriff’s Department staffer was arrested and accused of stealing more than $50,000 in public funds.
Renee Lorraine Wilson, 51, who started working for the department in 1998, was a supervising court services assistant, though the department said she retired last month.
The sheriff’s department did not detail how investigators allege the thefts happened. But Sgt. Michael Perez said in a statement Wednesday, June 3, that she “knowingly misappropriated approximately $54,000” for “personal use.”
Wilson, who lives in Jurupa Valley, posted bond and was released after being arrested Tuesday, June 2.
She was booked on suspicion of 10 charges: misappropriation of public funds and multiple counts each of grand theft, embezzlement by a public officer, and forgery.
She is tentatively slated to make an initial court appearance in early September, depending on when the District Attorney’s Office completes its review of the case and decides whether to prosecute.
Perez said the department’s Special Investigations Bureau began investigating Wilson in mid-March after uncovering unspecified evidence of misuse of agency money.
Wilson, who most recently served in the Civil Division Courts West branch, retired in May, Perez said.
