A San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office sergeant died while on duty Tuesday after experiencing a medical emergency, authorities announced on Wednesday.
The sheriff’s office said Sgt. Jason Whelen died despite immediate response and extensive life-saving measures by fellow deputies and medical personnel.
Whelen started his career with the sheriff’s office on Oct. 15, 2007, and was promoted to sergeant on Feb. 25, 2013.
“Throughout his career, he served this community with honor, integrity and compassion,” the sheriff’s office said in a social media post.
The sheriff’s office described Whelen as a proud husband and devoted father of four children.
He was known within the sheriff’s office for his kindness, steady leadership, his love for Jesus Christ and his infectious smile, according to the sheriff’s office.
“He brought positivity to those around him and was someone who could always be counted on,” the social media post said.
The post added, “Our thoughts are with Sergeant Whelen’s family, friends and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. The sheriff’s office mourns the loss of a respected leader, a valued partner and a cherished member of our law enforcement family.”
