There were a lot of shocked people when the Los Angeles Rams took Ty Simpson 13th overall in the draft on Thursday night. Some rivals in the NFC West might’ve even been happy about that surprising pick, including San Francisco 49ers GM John Lynch.
In his press conference after Round 1, Lynch was asked for his take on the Rams picking Simpson as early as they did, and he couldn’t help but smile before the question was even finished.
Naturally, Kyle Brandt brought it up to Sean McVay during an interview on NFL Network and McVay responded. McVay wasn’t bothered by it, laughing off Lynch’s reaction.
“I love John. I’d be interested to see, what’s he smirking at there?” McVay said. “What’s your takeaway from that?
“I’ve got a lot of respect for Lynchy. I can’t wait to be able to see him and see if he was smirking at us.”
McVay and the Rams will see Lynch and the 49ers this fall when the two NFC West foes square off in Australia, a game that hopefully won’t feature the Rams’ top pick. Simpson won’t play in that one unless Matthew Stafford is injured, so Lynch will have to wait a while before he sees Los Angeles’ young QB on the field.
Or maybe the Rams will blow out the 49ers and Simpson can kneel out the clock in the fourth.
