A San Bernardino County sheriff’s detective was shot and a suspect was killed as deputies served a search warrant service near Palmdale on Wednesday, authorities said.
The shooting took place about 3:10 p.m. Aug. 5 at Avenue R-2 and 130th Street in an unincorporated area on the eastern end of Los Angeles County, law enforcement officials said.
“The detective was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment,” San Bernardino Conuty Sheriff’s Department officials said in a written statement.
The wounded deputy was hospitalized in “stable” condition,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which was spearheading the investigation.
A suspect, initially described only as a man, died at the scene.
“San Bernardino Sheriff’s Detectives were conducting a search warrant,” the agency said in a written statement. “During the course of their investigation, a deputy-involved shooting occurred, and a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s detective was struck by gunfire.”
The wounded detective was improving after undergoing emergency surgery, San Bernardino County sheriff’s officials said.
“He continues to recover and is expected to be released from the hospital in the near future,” according to a statement from the department.
“We are grateful to the members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for their quick response, assistance, and immediate medical care provided to our detective,” the statement added. “We also want to thank the medical professionals and hospital staff at Antelope Valley Medical Center who continue to provide him with excellent medical care.”
No further details were available as the investigation remained in its early stages.
