Sean McVay jokes Aaron Donald ‘could make the team’ after ‘best tryout’ ever

The Los Angeles Rams worked out a 35-year-old undersized defensive tackle on Wednesday, giving him a shot to earn a place on the 53-man roster. That player is also a future Hall of Famer, and his name is Aaron Donald.

It came across the transaction wire that the Rams had a “tryout” for Donald before practice on Wednesday, which looks a bit strange given his resume. But it had to be reported to the league as an official tryout because Donald used the team’s equipment, such as a helmet.

Sean McVay was asked about the tryout by NFL Daily’s Gregg Rosenthal and Jourdan Rodrigue, and he joked that he thinks Donald “could make the team.”

“The best tryout that we’ve ever had,” he said sarcastically.

McVay explained that it was reported to the league because it was the team’s way of working him out “within the parameters of what’s necessary.”

“That was honestly our way of being able to get a workout with him within the parameters of what’s necessary,” McVay said Wednesday on “NFL Daily.” “(Defensive line coach) Giff Smith said it’s the greatest tryout he’s ever had.”

McVay said recently that Donald is trending toward returning, and that the arrow is pointing up. Donald still hasn’t committed to anything but everything suggests he’ll be playing for the Rams this season.
